Since you’re in college, did you have to send in some sort of art portfolio? Because I really wanna get into an art college, but I don’t really know how to make my portfolio. Have any tips? (I’m sorry if I wasted your time asking if art is just your hobby and/or you didn’t make a portfolio. I just really admire your art so much and wanted tips from you)

Oh my goodness you aren’t wasting my time, even if I just did this for fun! I don’t mind you guys asking questions at all about anything art related. There are no dumb questions.

The college that I attend is just a basic university, so I’m not really attending just an art college (Although I wish, they are just incredibly competitive and expensive). However, I did still have to submit a portfolio to get into the design program there. I personally had a lot of help from my high school teachers with creating a really nice portfolio (even though looking back at it now its garbage LOL), and I even took a class on portfolio development. So I personally had a very large advantage going into college.

Now depending on what program you are going to submit to, you either want to have a very broad range of pieces showcasing all of your abilities and talents, or you want to focus in on one particular strength and submit pieces in just that category. My particular case was that they wanted to see a range of what I could do, so I showed a ranged of different works, from my graphic design work, to some comic work, to still lifes and realistic artworks. So really whatever they are wanting, I would focus on that!

Now I have also learned a LOT about portfolios from just being in college these past 3 years, and I will begin to tell you, don’t over saturate your portfolio. Showcase your best work. My university I think asked for 8 pieces when I had to do my initial portfolio submission, so I had to throw in some sub-par work since I didn’t have a lot of pieces like I do now, but now that I am applying for jobs and whatnot in my home town, I’ve learned that potential employers and colleges just want to see anywhere from 5-8 pieces really. Don’t go overboard with like 13-20.

Another thing to take into consideration is standing out. Depending on whether or not you have to submit your portfolio digitally or physically, that can be an opportunity for you to stand out! Mine was just digital, so I could only let the work speak for me, but if you have to submit it physically, take an interesting route to presenting your work. You dont have to go all out, but look up interesting ways to physically present your portfolio! Making a lasting impression is so important in today’s art world, especially since the market is extremely over saturated with all of us LOL.

Also, dont stress too much about it. Just try your very best and go from there! Even if you aren’t accepted, if you are truly passionate about it, try again!

I hoped this helped, im pretty bad at advice LOL
